Mr. Oliver is engulfed in darkness all around once the wind blows off the lamp. The lamp however blows off the moment Mr. Oliver sees the watchman's face having no features. While already terrified, Mr. Oliver is even more appalled in the horrifying darkness that surrounds him totally.
