Summary Act I, scenes i–ii

Summary: Act I, scene i

Antonio, a Venetian merchant, complains to his friends, Salarino and Solanio, that a sadness has overtaken him and dulled his faculties, although he is at a loss to explain why. Salarino and Solanio suggest that his sadness must be due to his commercial investments, for Antonio has dispatched several trade ships to various ports. Salarino says it is impossible for Antonio not to feel sad at the thought of the perilous ocean sinking his entire investment, but Antonio assures his friends that his business ventures do not depend on the safe passage of any one ship. Solanio then declares that Antonio must be in love, but Antonio dismisses the suggestion.

Answer:

The merchant of venice by William Shakespeare Act 1 scene 1

Explanation:

Gratiano says that he would rather live to play the role of a jester replying to Antonio's comment on himself that he had to play the role of a sad being in this world .Gratiano says that with fun and laughter let his face get wrinkled and his liver heated with consumption of wine as here wine symbolizes happiness .He would not want his heart to be cold with sad groans .Then he asks Antonio that if he is young with warm blood inside his veins then why would a young man like him sit like an old man in an alabaster and when such a man sleeps after that he wakes up with a crept in jaundice. he asks Antonio not to be such a man. Then Gratiano tells Antonio that it is his love that that makes him (gratiano) speak so much. He further tells that there are some men who have faces as deep thoughts which are as creamy and smooth as the stagnant water
