I feel that Shylock was the victim because when Bassanio took loan from him and told him that Antonio will pay it off, Shylock mentions that Antonio used to discriminate against him for being a Jew and treated him worse than a dog. Even in the end when Shylock was about to take revenge from Antonio for his misdeeds as well as not paying off the loan , Portia turned the tables and asked him to cut out his own pound of flesh without shedding a single drop of blood as it is impossible to do so for Antonio. Shylock being scared was forced to give up the punishment and also give up his remaining wealth to Antonio and Jessica his daughter who ran away with Lorenzo stealing a huge fortune from her own father, and Shylock was also forced to convert to Christianity if he didn’t he would be thrown out of Venice.
It was Shakespeare who portrayed Shylock as the villain because he actually had prejudice against Jews.
