Given -

  • Three equal weights of mass m hanging on a string passing over a fixed pulley as shown in Figure.

To Find -

  • What are the Tensions in the string connecting weights A to B and B to C?

Now,

In Block A :-

  • T¹ - mg = ma

In Block B :-

  • T² + mg - T¹ = ma

In Block C :-

  • mg - T² = ma

Adding A and B :-

⇝T¹ - mg + T² + mg - T¹ = ma + ma

⇝T² = 2ma

Now,

Substituting the value of T² on mg - T² = ma, we get :-

⇝mg - 2ma = ma

⇝mg = 3ma

⇝a = g/3

Now,

Substituting the value of a on T¹ - mg = ma, to get T¹ :-

⇝T¹ = mg/3 + mg

⇝T¹ = 4/3 mg

And

Now,

Substituting the value of a on mg - T² = ma, to get T² :-

⇝T² = mg - ma

⇝T² = mg - mg/3

⇝T² = 2/3 mg

Hence,

The Tension between A to B is 4/3 mg and The Tension between B to C is 2/3 mg.

Therefore,
