Gypsum and calcium carbonate is added to the spawn mixture . why ?

Answer:

Gypsum was used to separate the grains from one another and CaCO3 was used to adjust the pH of the substrate. After thorough mixing, the grains were filled into large test tubes up to 3/4th of their capacity and stoppered with cotton plug.
