26 th January is a day of special significance .

On 26 th January , 1929 Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at the Lahore Session called for Complete Independence or " Poorna Swaraj ".

Since 1929 , this day was celebrated as the Independence Day till 1947.

26 th January was considered the Independence Day from 1929 - 1947 and then in August 15 , 1947 when India became independent , 15 th August was selected as the Independence Day .

26 th January was selected as the Republic Day when the Constitution came into force on this day on 1950 .

This day was specially selected for the historical significance of the Lahore Session .

Hence the date 26 th January is celebrated as the Republic Day.
