III. Inter-disciplinary question
Read the following paragraph and answer the questions given below.
Around 1500 BCE, the people of Mesopotamia used rope and pulleys to lift water
from wells. The first compound pulleys were invented by Archimedes of Syracuse in
Syracuse between 287 BCE-212 BCE. According to Plutarch's report, Archimedes
moved an entire warship, full of army men, using his compound pulleys with his own
strength
In Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin established his own printing press in 1730. He was
a young man at the time with limited capital in hand. The only space he could afford
was on the third floor of the Gerard Lloyd building located in downtown Philadelphia,
The stairs of the building were too narrow for the printing press machine to be
carried up. Franklin became disheartened at this and loaded the printing press back
onto the delivery truck for its return. But just as the horses began to pull the truck,
Ben noticed the turning wheels of the carriage and an idea struck his mind. Ben
ordered the carriage to stop and devised on elementary rope-pulley system to lift
the printing press machine to the third floor of the building. After this incident, Ben
shared his rope-pulley system design with his fellow patriots and the technology
was applied to many other applications,
1. Which simple machine is explained in the text given above?
2. Where did Benjamin Franklin establish his printing press?
3. Why was it not possible to take the printing press machine to the third floor at
first?
