Solution : The reaction is an oxidation reduction reaction (redox) reaction.

  • Oxidation number of bromine is -1 so in oxidation reaction oxidation number of bromine increases to 0 . The reaction is 2 Br^{-1} -2e^{-1} - > 2Br^{0}  , bromine is formed which is dark reddish brown fuming liquid.
  • Oxidation number of Sulphur is +6 in reduction reaction oxidation number of Sulphur will decrease to 4 . The reaction is S^{+6} +2e^{-} - > S^{+4},
  • Here HBr hydrogen bromide is reducing agent . It is colorless gas with a sharp irritating odor, it is often used in aqueous solution
  • Here H_{2}SO_{4} sulfuric acid is oxidizing agent . It is clear colorless oily hygroscopic liquid.
