Haber process is basically one of the most efficient and successful industrial procedures to be adopted for the production of AMMONIA (NH3)

Ammonia is used to make fertilizers, explosives and dyes.

In the this process "the atmospheric nitrogen(N2) is converted to ammonia (NH3) by reacting it with hydrogen (H2)"

N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇋ 2NH3(g)

(reversible reaction)

Normally a iron catalyst is used in this process to maintain the high pressure and temperature.

In the Haber process,

  • Nitrogen (extracted from the air) and hydrogen (obtained from natural gas) and are pumped through pipes.

  • The pressure of the mixture of the gases is increased to 200atm.

  • The pressurized gases are heated to 450°C and passed through a tank containing iron catalyst

  • Unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen gases are recycled.

  • In the final stage, the reaction mixture (ammonia) is cooled down so that it liquefies and can be stored in containers.
