Anton Chekhov
Poor Nikolai Chekhov. He was a very good painter but drank too much. He did have the great fortune of being the older brother of the greatest short-story writer ever to draw breath. Young Anton wrote him a very frank letter in March of 1886 scolding Nikolai that his problems were entirely of his own making. Chekhov told his “little Zabelin” he was living a lie and acting childishly for a man his age (almost 30) by opting for wastrels who’d soothe his petty frustrations over the brilliant and intellectual circles in which his talents earned him a place. “Smash your vodka bottle,” wrote Chekhov, “lie down on the couch and pick up a book.”
