hari singh was a fair handed thief he intended to rob anil but anil earned in fits and starts as he was a struggling writer. hari singh made money while he was buying supplies for house. anil knew everything about this as before he bought the supplies but wanted to educate him and made him realise that what he is doing is wrong. one day hari singh found anil keeping some money under the mattress. the thief in him arouse. he stole the money and went to the railway station but couldn't catch the train as he was struck hard by his conscience that how could he still some who loved and trusted him so much. he returned to anil kept the money under the mattress and slept next morning anil found the money was wet and realised that hari must have taken that and returned back to him. hari's return to anil shows that despite of indulging in criminal acts he still had a practical and positive attitude towards life
