Methods of obtaining raw materials:

Some materials like clay, ordinary wood were available locally but stones, fine, wood and metal alluvium had to be imported from the area beyond the plain. For this, the Harappans adopted many methods; Which were as follows:

(1) Establishing settlements;

Some raw materials were available locally while some were purchased from distant locations. Clay and wood were locally available raw materials. Stones, best quality wood, metals were sourced from far off places.

Harappan settlements were located in places where raw materials were readily available. Nageshwar and Balakot were famous for conch shells. Some places were famous for the blue stone Lazwerd gem like Shortughai in Afghanistan. Rajasthan and Gujarat were famous for copper. Lothal was famous for corneal.

(2) Sending Campaign:

Another method of obtaining raw materials was to send expeditions to various places. The evidence suggests that the expedition was sent to Khetri region of Rajasthan for copper and gold to South India. Local communities were approached through these campaigns.

The evidence of Harappan found at these places indicates contact between each other. The evidence found in the Khetri region by archaeologists was given the name of Ganeshwar Jodhpur culture. Huge reserves of copper products were found here. It is believed that the inhabitants of these regions sent copper to the people of Harappa.
