Haemoglobin is an iron containing respiratory pigment that carries

oxygen through red blood cells. Presence of haemoglobin gives

metallic taste to the blood. Haemoglobin is an intracellular

protein which acts as a primary vehicle for transporting 97% of

oxygen in the blood.

Which is not true about Haemoglobin-

a) It is a respiratory pigment.

b) It has a high affinity for oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The correct answer is OPTION B: It has a high oxygen and carbon dioxide affinity.

  • Any substance that improves the ability of blood to carry oxygen is referred to as a respiratory pigment.
  • The amount of oxygen that red blood cells can transport to our tissues and organs is known as their oxygen-carrying capacity.
  • In humans and most other animals, the protein haemoglobin is the most prevalent respiratory pigment.
  • Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, a protein molecule that transports oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs.
