Hairy the Hippopotamus On one of the upper branches of the Congo River, there lived an age-old and noble family of hippopotamuses. They were proud of being an old family who knew the place so well. They were here when the world was dark and new. The Congo was their home. They knew every curve and movement of its waters, every pit and shallow of its bed, and every rock and stump upon its bank. One day, it was said that the queen had a baby Everybody was excited! The queen, it was told, was still asleep. However, as soon as everyone looked at the baby, they knew that something was not quite right. The baby looked healthy, but something did not seem right. Amidst the hush-hush, hee-haw, how-wow, and what-why, the baby passed from one person to another until the queen woke up. When she was awake, she asked for the baby. Everyone was nervous. Would the queen be angry? What would she feel? The baby was brought to her with his face covered. When the queen removed the cover queen from the baby's face, everyone held their breath. To everyone's surprise, the hugged the baby! She cried and rejoiced and kissed the baby a hundred and fourteen times! Everybody was relieved. Clearly the queen had not noticed the bushy eyebrows on the face of the baby hippopotamus. - Abridged and edited from 'The Laughing Hippopotamus' by L. Frank Baum A.
