Hakim Sheik belonged to the Paschim Banga Khet Mazdoor Samity (PBKMS), a West Bengal-based farm labourers' association. He received brain injuries after he fell off a speeding train one evening in 1992. He was in critical state and required emergency medical attention. He was rushed to a government hospital in Kolkata, but they denied him due to a lack of beds. Another hospital lacked the required equipment and specialised specialists to treat him. He spent 14 hours in a serious condition as a result of this and was brought to eight different government hospitals, and yet none of them would admit him. He was eventually admitted to a private hospital, where he was treated.
