Let length of the bamboo pole be y m

Part buried in mud is y/3 m

Part in water is y/6 m

Total part buried in mud and water is y/3 + y/6 = 3y/6 = y/2 m

According to the question,

y/2 + 3 = y

y/2 = 3

y = 6 m

The length of the shortest pole is 6 m.
