[SOLUTION] Let the no. of deers be x.
Deers grazing = $\frac{1}{2}x$ ,
And the deers playing nearby = $\frac{3}{4} ( \frac{1}{2}x )$
                                               = $\frac{3}{8} x$
ATQ, 
$=\ \textgreater \ \frac{1}{2}x + \frac{3}{8}x + 9 = x$
$=\ \textgreater \ \frac{1}{2}x + \frac{3}{8}x - x = -9$
$=\ \textgreater \ \frac{4x+3x-8x}{8} = -9$
=> 4x + 3x - 8x = -9 X 8
=> 7x - 8x = -72
=> -x = -72
=> x = 72                              [ minus-minus cancelled out ]

Therefore, there are 72 deers in the herd. [ ANSWER ]
