let the total no be x.

no. if deer grazing = 1/2 x

no. of deer playing = 3/4( x- x/2)

= 3/4 ( 2x-x /2)

= 3/4 × x/2

= 3x/8

no . of deer drinking water = 9.

a/q, x= x/2 +3x/8+ 9

x- x/2 - 3x /8 = 9

(8x - 4x - 3x )/8= 9

x/ 8 = 9

x= 9×8

x= 72.

hope it helps..

let total no. of deer = x

Number of deer grazing = 1/2 of x = 1/2x

therefore, Remaining deer = x-1/2x = 1/2x

Number of deer playing = 3/4 of 1/2x

                                        = 3/8x

Number of deer drinking water = 9

Therefore, total deer in the herd = 1/2x + 3/8x + 9

x = 1/2x + 3/8x + 9

=>9 = X - (1/2x + 3/8x)

=> 9 = X- 7/8x

=> 9 = 1/8X

therefore, X (that is the total deer in the herd) = 9 x 8/1

                                                                                = 72/1

                                                                                = 72 deer in herd
