Total number of deer in the herd be x

deer grazing in the field = 1/2 *x

deer playing nearby = 3/4 * x/2 = 3x/8

number of deer drinking water = 9

x/2 + 3x/8 + 9 = x

4x + 3x + 72 / 8 = x

7x + 72/8 = x

7x + 72 = x * 8

7x + 72 = 8x

72 = 8x - 7x

72 = x
