Haloalkanes (also known as alkyl halides) are a class of organic compounds in which the one or more halogen atoms are attached to sp3 hybridised carbon atom(s) in a molecule in place of hydrogen atoms. Thus in alkyl halides, the halogen atom is bonded to an alkyl group (R). For example: CH3Cl, C2H5Br etc are alkyl halides.

The haloalkanes (also known as halogenoalkanes or alkyl halides) are a group of chemical compounds derived from alkanes containing one or more halogens. They are a subset of the general class of halocarbons, although the distinction is not often made.
