There group number is 17 or (VII A).

All of them have valency 1.

In reactions with metals the halogen atoms gain an electron to form ions with a 1− charge. The metal halide formed is an ionic compound. With non-metals, the halogens form covalently bonded molecules.

Halogens are

Flourine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine.
