Given:

(i) Hamid had three times as much money as Rashid.

(ii) If Hamid gives Rashid 50 Rashid will then have three times as much money as Hamid

To find:

(i) How much money do the two of them have together

Solution:

Initially, Hamid had 3 times as much as Rashid.

Let us consider Hamid to have Rs x and Rashid Rs y.

So, x = 3y  ....(1)

After giving Rs 50 to Rashid, Hamid will have Rs (x-50) and Rashid Rs (y+50).

Now,

y+50 = 3(x-50)

⇒ y+50 = 3x-150

⇒ y = 3x-200

Substituting the value of x from (1), we get,

y = 3(3y) - 200

⇒ 8y = 200

⇒ y = 200/8 = 25

x = 3y

= 3(25)

= 75

So, Hamid has Rs 75 and Rashid has Rs 25.
