hammer of mass 1kg strikes on the head of a nail with a velocity of 10m/s. It drives the nail 1cm into a wooden

block. Calculate the force applied by the hammer and time of impact.

Mass of hammer, M = 1 kg

Initial velocity, u = 10 m/s

Final velocity, v = 0 m/s

Distance covered, s = 1 cm = 0.01 m

v² - u² = 2as

⇒ 0 - 10² = 2*a*0.01

⇒ -100 = 0.02a

⇒ a = -4/0.02 = -5000 m/s²

Force = ma = 1*5000 = 5000N

Time = (v-u)/a = (0-10)/(-5000) = 0.002 second
