1.Hampi is a town in Hospet taluk of the Ballari district in the Indian state of Karnataka.  

2. Hampi is also called "The City of Ruins". The Vijayanagara ruins are listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

3. The village was also known as Pampa - Kshetra or Kishkindha - Kshetra. The name was derived from the old name of the Tungabhadra River  

4. It grew into one of the famed Hindu empires of South India that ruled for over 200 years.  

5. The temple is dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Shiva. The temple was built by Lakkan Dandesha, a nayaka (chieftain) under the ruler Deva Raya II of the Vijayanagara Empire.
