It was not until recently that women began to break this ancient mold that has historically restricted them. Before this revolution, women were expected to play their part, and that part was definitely not equal to that of a man. Unfortunately, sometimes when women decide that they do not want to fulfill their role, many men and sometimes women look down upon them in disapproval. Throughout the book “To the Lighthouse” by Virginia Woolf, she uncovers the difference between traditional and modern roles of the woman. She explores the true definition of female gender roles. Through her distribution of the stream of consciousness style, the author plunges the reader into the internal realm of her female characters and articulates these themes through their emotions and outlooks. In the novel, Woolf contrasts two descriptions of women. The first is represented by Mrs. Ramsay, who is more traditional. The other, a much more modern woman, which are represented by Lily.
