When electricity is passed through aqua sodium chloride . this compound breaks down . sodium being a metal contains a cation i.e a positive ion and gets attracted to the cathode i.e the negative terminal wheras chlorine being nonmetal contains anion i.e negative ion and gets attracted to the anode i.e the positive terminal .
hence the gas released at anode is chlorine gas
