The celebration of Holi festival is not just about playing with colours. There is a religious history, which backs the significance of this festival. As per legends, when young Lord Krishna was in doubt over whether he would be able to win over the love of Radha because of his dark skin, his mother Yashoda suggested him to go and playfully smear Radha with colours. Krishna did the same to Radha and her gopis, and in return, got playfully beaten up by them with sticks. So started the tradition of playing both the normal Holi and also the Lathmar Holi, which is celebrated in the Braj region of Mathura and Vrindavan, the places where Lord Krishna was born and brought up respectively.
