A treatment in which a part is subjected to two complete hardening operations, or first an annealing process followed by a hardening process. Tempering. Tempering is a low temperature heat treatment process normally performed after a hardening process in order to reach a desired hardness/toughness ratio.

Hardening is a metallurgical metalworking process used to increase the hardness of a metal . The hardness of a metal is directly proportional to the uniaxial yield stress at the location of the imposed strain . A harder metal will have a higher resistance to plastic deformation less than a less hard metal
