Hari goes for a hike. He starts from his
campsite, walks 1 km towards East and then
he turns to South and walks 5 km. Again he
turns to the East and walks 2 km, after this
he turns to North and walks 9 km. How far is
he from his camp?

Answer:

He is 3km to the West and 4km to the North of the Campsite and the displacement would be 5km (shortest distance from campsite).

Step-by-step explanation:

To answer problems of this kind, the best way is to draw out the scenario keeping these in mind:

Any distance to the South is drawn downward,

North is upward,

East is to the right and

West is to the left of your drawing paper.

He walked 1km East (right) first and then another 2km East again, so 3km East in total. He walked 5km South (down) and then 9km North (up), so the net distance will be 9-5 that is 4km North.

The figure becomes: ( • is the campsite and x is Hari's apparent position)

x Hari

•___|

3km

And the diagonal distance is 5km (square root of 4²+3²)
