Hari goes to a shopping mall. While going up the
escalator, which is moving downward he takes 30
seconds to reach the top and while going down
the same escalator he takes 10 seconds to reach
the bottom. What is the time taken for him to
move up the escalator if the escalator is switched
off? (Assume the person always moves with
constant speed while using the escalator)

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the speed of Hari be X and speed of escalator be Y

Let the length of escalator be S

Then the net speed of Hari while going upward is X-Y and while coming down is X+Y.

Therefore, X-Y = S/30

X+Y= S/10

After solving we get X= S/15

Time taken by him to move up the escalator when it is switched off = S/(S/15)

= 15 sec
