Although atmospheric contact does contribute to discoloration of silver, it is the purity of silver that is more responsible. Jewellers mix zinc to silver and have consistently propagated that good silver will always turn black over a period of time. This is far from true and I regularly use several silver vessels (over a few kilograms). We keep different materials like milk, curd, lemon juice, honey etc. in these vessels for a few hours and wash them clean with mild soap once the activity is over. Not even the smallest item in the lot has turned black for several years now.
