To enhance the quality of taste, we add the following substances -

1. Artificial Sweet Substances

Example : Sucrose is an artificial sweetener which is obtained from cane sugar. It is unhealthy for the body because it contains large calorific value.

Saccharine is also a sweetener but it increases the risk of causing tumours.

2. Food Colors

Food colors or dyes are generally made from petroleum. Many of the food dyes used in food are considered to be toxic.

  • Food manufacturer often add variety of substance to preserve  food articles and to make it more attractive or to enhance its taste, appearance, or other qualities.

  • Harmful chemicals - Sucrose is a natural sweetener. we obtain from natural resources like cane sugar. If sucrose has a high caloric value and is considered unhealthy in high doses.

  • Most common chemical is sodium benzoate. It is a salt of benzoic acid and the resulting product of the reaction between sodium hydroxide and benzoic acid. Sodium benzoate is a particularly effective preservative for acidic foods. Itinhibits the growth of microbes.

  • Other nitrates (for example atomic number 11 nitrate) and sulphites (like sodium sulphite) also are effective food preservatives.
  • Like all chemicals in food, in small quantities they are harmless. But in large quantities, they can have ill effects on human health.
