What is pollution?

Pollution : The harmful effects made by the pollutants.


Pollutants :  The substances which are present in the environment/nature in more amount. Those are harmful.

Air pollution :

The contamination of air by the harmful substances (air pollutants) which is harmful on both the living and the non-living.


The substances which contaminates air are called air pollutants.


Here are some air pollutants with their harmful effects-

Carbon Monoxide : It is formed by the incomplete combustion of fuels.

Its harmful effects -

  • High concentration of it in air affects the growth of the plants causing leaf drop.
  • When it is inhaled by human it causes suffocation.

Nitrogen dioxide : It is produced by the combustion of petrol/gasoline in automobile.

  • It results in respiratory problems in human beings.

Smog : The mixture of smoke and fog.

Its harmful effects -

  • It leads to diseases relating to lungs, such as asthma, bronchitis etc.
