40km/hour = 40 km travel distance

However while he is actually only covering the same distance while he is travelling at 60km /hour

So on his return trip he completes the 40km in just 40mins

So the distance is 80km round trip and it was completed 60min + 40mins = total of 100 minutes

So 80km ÷100 minutes = 0.8km per minute x 60 minutes / hour = Therefore the average speed is 48km per hour.
