Election Commission of India allowed the government to go ahead with the appointment of the country’s new army chief hours after the polling ended in the last phase on May 12. The commission had actually allowed the Ministry of Defence to forward the file to the appointment committee headed by the prime minister two weeks ago but the government sought its explicit permission again to be doubly sure.

Election in one of the biggest democracies is a challenging task.

  • Elections in India were carried out by the Election Commission of India. It was formed on 25th october, 1950. All Central, State, Local body elections are initiated by them. It is a statutory body governed by the constitution which means its powers and functions are derived from the constitution and not from the executives like the President, Prime Minister etc. The first election in India was held on 25th october 1951. Followed by this, there were many elections which changed the political nature of the country.
  • In 1975, Mrs.Indira Gandhi, our former Prime Minister's election was challenged under the Representation of People's act. Her parliamentary election was challenged by the Supreme court. Later, She failed to prove her stance. Then, she proclaimed a National Emergency. This was considered to be one of the landmark judgements by the Supreme court.

In a country like India, one of the largest populations in the world, it is very tough to manage the election process. But India remained exceptional. It follows the same law for the Prime Minister of the country and the layman.
