Pollination is the process through which the male gametes of  a flower come in contact of the stigma. Stigma is the structure containing the ovary where fertilization happens.

Explanation:

Pollination is the process through which the male gametes (pollen grains) of a flower come in contact of the stigma. Stigma is the structure containing the ovary where fertilization happens.

Pollination happens through various modes:

  1. Air
  2. Water
  3. Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, insects, birds etc
  • The flowers adapt over a period of time to facilitate pollination by air.
  • There are two types of pollination: Self pollination and Cross pollination.
  • Plants  undergo self-pollination when pollinated by air in most cases. Self pollination is when the fertilization occurs within the same flower or between different flowers on the same plant (it is also called as Geitonogamy).
  • Xenogamy is also a possibility during air pollination where the pollen grain of a flower gets deposited on the stigma of a flower on a different plant of the same species.
  • Adaptations are made to facilitate pollination.
  1. The male and female gametophytes in the flowers develop and mature at the same time.  The two important factors are time of maturation and position. The anther and stigma are placed very closely so pollination happens easily. The anther and stigma develop around the same time so that fertilization can happen.
  2. They have an open whorl to allow the fertilization of different flowers among the same plant. The petals are wide open, exposing the stamen and stigma of the flower. This facilitates fertilization through air. Once the pollen are matured they have a chance of fertilizing with other matured flowers present on the same plant.
