Passage to Past

My grandmother is an octogenarian. She was a witness to our freedom at midnight. She is still strong and steady.

When asked the secret of her strength she took us on a time ride through the back stage of her yester-years.

Grandmother asserted that her age was a very different age. She, being a girl, could not attend school, instead a governess came to teach her. She was specifically taught embroidery , knitting and stitching.

There was no television those days, internet was a faraway mirage. A radio served as the only source of technical entertainment. But there were other sources of entertainment.

When she was a small girl she and her friends created their own dolls out of mud, wool or wood. They arranged for doll's marriage in a grand ceremony in their individual doll houses.

They attended many puppet shows, battle of rhymes between poets, a lot of open-air drama.

She attended all the fairs that took place . Along with the other ladies of the family she stayed overnight at the fairs which were exciting sources of entertainment.

The means of local travel were the bullock carts and buffalo carts. Great grandfather did own an old land master which was used on special occasions.

Railways were just developing under the supervision of the British. The postal system still operated through the 'Runners'.

Food was not fast or junk.It was a grand affair. Breakfast always comprised rotis and puris served with a fry and a dessert and sweets.

Lunch was always of five courses served in utensils made of bronze. Food was prepared in excess so that if there happened to be any unexpected visitors food could be served and nobody would go hungry.

Dinner comprised milk, puffed rice and sweets.

Work stress was comparatively less. The hustle and bustle of city life did not exist. There was no target to be achieved. Life was relatively relaxed falling short in materialistic needs.

Thus there was no pizza or coke, no home delivery, no computers and no smart phones.

Life dictated its own conditions in a different age and different time not matching in the least with ours.
