Let number of green candies be x and of purple be y.
x = 3y ....(1)
and x + y = 28 ....(2)
Substitute value of x from equation (1) in equation (2),
3y + y = 28
4y = 28
y = 28/4
y = 7
Substitute value in equation (1),
x = 3y
x = 3(7)
x = 21
There are 21 green candies and 7 purple candies.
