Have plastics improved our quality of life?

There is no doubt plastics have made man’s life full of ease and convenience. Plastics have become almost an integral part of each and every human being’s life on the planet. There is no company, manufacturer, seller that does not use plastic. Plastics have become ubiquitous. The consumption of plastics worldwide will stagger you! According to oceancrusaders.org shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year. This means about a million bags every minute across the globe or 150 bags a year for every person on earth. The problem with most of the plastics is their toxicity, strength, and the ability to last long in all types of weather or climate conditions.

These qualities of plastic make it a deadly material which poses threat to environment. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals annually, as well as millions of birds and fishes. Since plastics have become so widely used because of their versatility, one can’t imagine life without them. Scientists should find out a way to make plastics more environment-friendly. In a country like India, plastic is used so much by the poor, and the middle class people. It has become part of their day-to-day existence. So, the only solution left is making it eco-friendly. Keeping in view the various uses of plastics, the most viable option is to alter the properties of plastic. The scientists should develop such plastics as do not harm the environment in any manner. Banning plastics may mean depriving people of its various benefits that no other material can provide.
