Have you ever heard the expression “Necessity is the mother of invention”? The saying originated from the fact that when people are in need, they often invent something to fill that need. For example, the Midwestern meat industry needed a way to keep meat from spoiling so they could ship it to markets in the East. This necessity was the mother of an invention—refrigerated railroad cars. People often invent things in times of war. After the war is over, civilians may end up using these inventions for peaceful purposes. Unfortunately, some inventions have no other purpose than to kill the enemy more effectively. Below is a list of problems faced by those who fought World War II. Beside each problem, list innovations or inventions that people came up with to solve the problem.
