Anyone else, like us, who has decided to go and live in another Country must find themselves regularly considering – Is this what I expected? and Really were my expectations correct? Almost certainly the answer will be well…..Yes and erm No! No matter how much you research and plan, or how many visits you may have made, there will always be surprises along the way. One of the most interesting for us, has been the unwritten social codes that exist and which we are slowly unraveling. There is a very strong family culture in Greece – backed up by an almost reverential attitude towards the matriarch of the family – the Kyria. These formidable ladies are the hub of every village and community, mostly wearing black if they are widowed, they are the font of knowledge for recipes, cooking, storing, gathering, herb lore and making use out of every bit of produce to pass along the kitchen worktops. We see a number of these fine Ladies as we drive or walk around. They are usually out gathering herbs, fruit or vegetables from their own plots, or even those just growing wild beside the roads.
