The reason that we're reading this text in English is as follows:

  • English is read widely in India. The reason behind this lies in the colonial history of India
  • British ruled Indian territory for 200 years in which they introduced English as the medium of education to educate Indians in English
  • There were several reasons behind it
  • First, they wanted to raise a generation of Indians who were Indian in blood and color but their taste was conditioned according to English Culture. This would ensure loyalty to the British masters and their rule
  • Second, they could be trained easily to work in the government to provide for the human resources and easily communicate and coordinate with the Englishmen.
  • Thirdly, to brainwash them of their native cultures and make them believe in and worship the superiority of English culture
  • Thousands of schools were established and an elaborate education system was implemented. After independence, we continued that system as it provided a pan-India medium of communication which was a boon in the face of difficulty created by hundreds of regional languages.

Therefore English is widely read in India
