HCF is short form of Highest Common Factor, and LCM is short form of Lowest Common Multiple.

To find the HCF, let us list the common factors of 12 and 18 . They are 2, 3 and 6. As you see, 6 is the highest common factor, which means that HCF of 12 and 18 is 6.

LCM of 12 and 18 can be found by the following method:

Remainder of 12÷6× remainder of 18÷6×6. (Note that if 12 is x and 18 is y with hcf 6, you should continue to divide until remainder is a prime number)

Let us do the math. 2×3×6=6×6=36.

Therefore LCM of 12 and 18=36
