Step-by-step explanation:

Look for the factors of the difference between any two closest numbers. The reasoning behind this simple trick is actually quite natural. If say there are three numbers with their HCF as h , then they can be expressed as a1h , a2h and a3h where a1 , a2 and a3 don’t have any common factor except 1 . When you take the difference between any two the resultant will be divisible by h . The reverse reasoning states that HCF can’t be more than the difference. If you choose a nearby pair, you’ll get to the answer more quickly.

Here’s an example :

Q. Find HCF of (87 , 319 , 348)

> closest numbers : 348 and 319

> difference : 348–319=29

> Now, since the difference came out to be a prime number, you only need to check the numbers with 29 . Otherwise you would have also checked with it’s factors.

> The three numbers are divisible by 29 . So, that’s our answer. If any one number wasn’t divisible by 29 , we would have concluded that HCF = 1 without any doubts.
