our stomach remains safe because HCL and stomach is separated by a lining if mucus.sometimes when our stomach produces excessive HCL we have stomach ache it is also called acidity.so during acidity we take antacid tablets which contains milk of magnesium that is magnesium hydroxide which neutralises the excessive HCL produced by our stomach. :)
