HCL & proteolytic enzymes does not act on the wall on the stomach because the wall is covered by mucous ,which forms a barrier .

HCL and proteolytic enzymes produced by stomach wall do not digest it's own wall because ::-
1.Goblet cells in the mucosa secret large quantities of protective mucus that lines the mucosal surface.
2.Basic electrolytes, such as HCO3- ,trapped inside the layer of mucus neutralize any HCL that penetrates the mucus.
4.This mucus layer also protects the mucosa from proteolytic enzymes in the lumen.
So wall of stomach is covered by mucus which forms a barrier, because of which neither HCL nor proteolytic enzymes don't reach the wall. Hope the above facts will help to understand how HCL and proteolytic enzymes don't digest wall of stomach. Thanks.
