x-y= +- 16( as we don't know who is bigger)

Let us assume that x is elder.

x-y=16

x=16+y-------(1)

6 years ago,x age = x-6

y's age = y-6

x-6 = 3(y-6)

x-6 =3y-18

x=3y-18+6

x=3y-12---------(2)

Comparing equation 1 and 2

16 +y=3y-12

16+12=3y-y

28=2y

28/2=y

14=y

x=16+y

x=16+14

x= 30 years.
