Indirect Speech refers to speech bring said to a third person or reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"What's the time?" (Direct)

She asked what the time was. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in reported/indirect form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'will' changes to 'would', 'yesterday' changes to 'the previous day', 'these' changes to 'those' and many other words will have to be made.

He asked me,"Can you swim?" (Direct)

He asked me if I could swim. (Indirect)

Hope it helps :)
