He became a bit sad because it was difficult for a clerk to spare four hundred francs
from his meagre salary. But to please his wife he said, “All right, I'll give you four hundred
francs. Try to get a nice dress."
As the day of the party approached, Mrs. Loisel seemed to be sad again. When her
husband asked her the reason, she said, “I have no jewellery, nothing to wear on my dress
I'll look a pauper in the party.”
Mr. Loisel couldn't afford jewellery. He suggested, “Go, see your friend Mrs
Frostier. Ask her to lend you some jewellery. She is your old friend and she is rich."
Mathilde gave a cry of joy. “Oh!I hadn't thought of that."
So next day she paid a visit to her friend. She was astonished when Mrs. Frostie
agreed to lend her a diamond necklace.
