The 'recycling of nutrients' through different components in the ecosystem is called the 'nutrient cycle' or 'biogeochemical cycle'. It is basically the flow of energy and the continuous exchange of nutrients is taking place between the 'living and the non living environment'.

Explanation:

  • The 'recycling of inorganic matter' between 'living organisms' and their non living environment is called as biogeochemical cycles.
  • These can be of two types: the gaseous biogeochemical cycle which takes place in the atmosphere and the sedimentary biogeochemical cycle which takes place on the earth crust.
  • The gaseous biogeochemical cycles are faster and do not have a reserve on earth crust. While sedimentary cycles are slower and has a large reserve of such elements called as reservoir pool.
  • Examples of gaseous biogeochemical cycle are: Carbon cycle, Water cycle, etc. Examples of sedimentary biogeochemical cycle are: phosphorus cycle.

Answer:

The ways in which an element—or compound such as water—moves between its various living and nonliving forms and locations in the biosphere is called a biogeochemical cycle. Biogeochemical cycles important to living organisms include the water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycles.
